Hi – I’m Nelly Fungo-Nsemwa and, like so many others, after a long working career, retirement was a new word in my life.
I had been employed by various international organisations for more than 40 years when the opportunity arose to take early retirement. I reassured my family that all would be OK, that everything was under control, and I was in no doubt that I would have plenty to do, but even so entering a new and very different phase of my life was always going to be a major change.
My dream was always to enjoy retirement. I was excited – at last I would have that most precious of things – time. I could do whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted to.
And yet things didn’t somehow go to plan. Too often my dreams remained unacted upon. I was able to look after my grandchildren, which I loved, but other aspects of my new life somehow failed to slot into place. Instead of enjoying my retirement to the full, I was becoming stressed. I had very little certainty as to what was happening next. My head was full all sorts of whys and hows. I had 101 questions going on.
I knew what the issue was. I had failed to take action prior to my retirement. Thinking about retirement, and dreaming of fantastic ways to fill my time was great, but where were the actual plans? I had no concrete knowledge of how to do any of these things. I had left that vital ingredient out of the mix.
I knew I needed to take control of my life again. I hadn’t gone into retirement to spend my days watching soaps. And so I formed a plan and put it into action, starting an online business providing catering, servicing, and cooking classes based on simple African recipes – all from my own home.
Since then, things have completely changed for me. My life is more exciting. As well as my business, I find countless to help my community, and I love going on holidays – I also have a great dog named Jack, and I like piña coladas! And yet at the same time I haven’t compromised time with the family I adore.
It seemed to me that my own experience could be used to help others, which is why I also set up African Retire. I want others to make the most of their retirement by planning in advance. Whatever your age, the time to plan for your retirement is now. It’s all too easy for a person to think matters are in hand because they have pension provision or savings. But remember, in retirement money is not everything that will make you happy.
Don’t let fear of the unknown take over your life. Don’t let it be a determining factor in what you would like to achieve. Don’t let it stifle your dreams. You can achieve what you want and live the life you desire.
Persistence, determination and patience works wonders – and so does a helping hand. Let me be the one to offer it with African Retire.
Thanks for visiting, I look forward to speaking with you.
